Oral pathology has an important role in solving oral health issues, but what exactly is it?

What You Need To Know About Oral Pathology

Oral pathology is the study of diseases such as cancer, oral disorders, and gum disease. It covers an enormous number of conditions which is what makes pathologists crucial in dentistry. A pathologist will analyze and diagnose a patient if they spot a problem - allowing dentists, orthodontists, and oral surgeons to take action efficiently.

How Do Oral Pathologists Help?

An oral pathologist is trained to spot a wide variety of conditions that might have not been caught so soon - this is why they are a critical component in any dentist office. The earlier negative conditions such as oral cancer and periodontitis can be spotted, the sooner the patient gets treated to prevent further damages. In addition to this, they will spot disorders and work with oral surgeons to determine the best course of action. Having pathologists work with other departments ensures that patient analysis and treatment goes both smoothly and efficiently. Here are examples of conditions that a pathologist will analyze.

Gum Disease

Both gingivitis and periodontal disease are common oral diseases. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease and while certainly not good for someone, it can be reversed if action is taken swiftly. Periodontal disease happens when gingivitis is left untreated and the damages caused by it are permanent - which is why it is crucial to treat it as early as possible.

TMD

Temporomandibular joint disorder is another condition a pathologist will look for. Symptoms of TMD include jaw pain, locked jaws, a clicking sound when the mouth opens and closes, and misaligned jaws. TMD can be treated with surgery as needed. The condition involves the temporomandibular joint, which connects the jaw to the skull, being compromised. Someone can either be born with TMD or have it develop throughout their lives.

Oral Cancer

Oral cancer affects over 50,000 Americans a year and like cancer in general, it is no joke. This disease can be caused by a variety of factors, but smoking is often blamed due to the much higher risk factor for patients who smoke. Signs of oral cancer include red patches and lumps inside the mouth. Patients that are considered at risk of developing oral cancer undergo an oral cancer screening.
