When deciding whether or not implants are the right choice for you it is important to know the proper facts, which is one of our priorities at Union Mill Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center - to inform patients about all of the various services we provide.

Do Implants Feel Like Teeth?

Implants do not contain nerves like your teeth do and so you won’t feel anything when food or anything else touches them directly. What you will feel however, is the pressure from the surrounding gums. They will feel more intuitive than dentures, however since the support is mounted in your jawbone.

Do Implants Hurt?

While it might sound scary that they are planted in your jawbone, implants will not cause you pain. However, you may feel discomfort after surgery as your jaws are healing and bonding with the implants - this is perfectly normal and isn’t unlike traditional jaw surgery.

Does the Overall Procedure Take Long?

It takes up to 6 months for your jawbone to bond with the implants and during this time you will be given temporary teeth. The exception to this rule is all-on-4 implants which can be completed in a single sitting. The jaws will still need to bond with the implants thus you still need to be very careful as you would be temporary implants.

In addition to this, if we have to perform a bone graft procedure to restore lost bone to be able to properly place the implants, this can up to a year or more for the added bone material to bond with the original bone - typically all-on-4 implants can skip this step as well as they can be placed at an angle to cater to a patient’s available bone.

How Long Do Implants Last?

Implants can last decades or potentially the rest of your life even. The teeth themselves are made of porcelain which is incredibly strong and is considered a top tier material for dental crowns. It is important to take care of your implants like you would natural teeth so they can remain functional - this means brushing and flossing daily as well as having regular checkups.

How Do You Clean Implants?

You can clean implants using toothpaste with a low abrasion rating. It is important to avoid toothpaste with whitening ingredients such as hydrogen peroxide and baking soda - ingredients that are found in whitening toothpaste. These ingredients do not whiten implants and can actually damage them.

Flossing is done with threaded floss, which is specifically designed for implants and crowns. They are thick in the middle and thin at the tips for efficient cleaning.

How Much Do Implants Cost?

The overall cost of dental implants will vary based on how many implants you have as well as the number of teeth you need - jaw quality also plays a factor. A single implant with a single tooth can cost anywhere between $3500 - $4600 while replacing all your teeth with all-on-4 implants can cost $15,000 - $25,000. Insurance will cover a portion of the cost.
