Tooth Extraction in Mt Laurel, NJ
Tooth extraction becomes necessary when a tooth has become damaged beyond repair or it has died. It may sound scary, but it is a relatively common dental surgery procedure that causes the patient no pain. There are a multitude of reasons why a tooth can end up being extracted and at Union Mill Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center, Dr. Jaffery will help you make the right decisions regarding your dental health.
How Does Tooth Extraction Work?
Extracting a non-impacted tooth is a common procedure that isn't as bad as it sounds. We will begin numbing the area with local anesthesia - additional sedation can also be requested for patients who feel nervous.
After the area has been numbed, we will gently begin to rock the tooth back and forth to loosen it using a tool called an elevator. You will feel some pressure during this, but no pain. Please do let us know if you feel any discomfort during any part of the extraction procedure as some people may require more anesthesia than others to get the intended effects.
After the tooth has been sufficiently loosened, it will be removed using forceps. Finally, you will be instructed to bite down forcibly on a piece of gauze to stop the bleeding after the tooth has been extracted. Overall, this procedure should take approximately 30 minutes per tooth.
Recovery Process
After the extraction, there will be a recovery process that involves taking things easy until the area has healed. A blood clot will have formed after the bleeding has stopped - it is important to not dislodge this to ensure the healing process goes as well as possible. For the first 24 hours you will be instructed to avoid rinsing, consuming hot beverages and soups, and to avoid chewing tough foods.
Reasons Why Teeth Are Extracted
As touched on above, a tooth that is beyond saving must be extracted. Here are common scenarios where a tooth extraction procedure is done.
Tooth Infection
Waking up to an excruciatingly painful toothache that won't go away is a horrible experience to endure and unfortunately, this may mean an infection has reached deep levels where the damage has been done. This also includes cavities that have grown too large for fillings, an inlay, or a crown to save it.
Injury
Dental trauma is also a terrible experience to go through - especially when the damage done is irreparable. An example of this would be a tooth that has had half of the crown broken.
Impacted Teeth
This commonly happens with wisdom teeth, but it can also happen with adult teeth. If a tooth fails to erupt fully, or even fails to break through the gums, it likely needs to be removed. Impacted teeth are more at risk of tooth decay and they can cause discomfort or crowding for the person.
